Being a mermaid…

…is a great tool to talk to kids about important environmental topics. In 2016, I cut my hand on a small piece of plastic whilst freedivining in Indonesia. I was surrounded by more plastic in the Indian Ocean than fish. To raise awareness, I swam the length of the River Thames in a mermaid tail to highlight how we’re choking our marine life with plastic. Along the way, I rescued a cow and ended up on page 3 of a national tabloid. A school emailed me and said: “your story has all the elements of a great kids story,”

and asked if they could use it for their school play. So I turned it into a kids book- The Mermaid and the Cow. I dressed Pippa my dog up as a cow and sat in fields in my mermaid tail across the country, reading to any curious little people who came by. Kids love mermaids. I love adventure, storytelling and campaigning for the environment. So I’m now working on a series of mermaid adventure swims and books linked to different environmental issues. Recently, I’ve been seen mermaiding down rivers or across the Bristol Channel with a big poo.

My books have been turned into shows which have performed at festivals like Glastonbury and Womad, Edinburgh Fringe and schools across the country.

If you’d like an environmental adventure mermaid author to come to your school, event or birthday party then please get in touch.
